Alumni Spotlight: Brandt Redd ('90)

Brandt Redd graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Computer Science in 1990 and completed his MBA an emphasis in Organizational Communication in 1994. While still an undergraduate he co-founded Folio Corporation in 1986 and was the co-inventor of the Folio Infobase Technology.  In this Alumni Spotlight, CS Connections asks Brandt to evaluate how his BYU CS experience helped him build a career and to advise current students and young alumni on successful technical careers.  Read More

CS Grad makes headlines for his dedication to volunteer work

When Ben Hardin, a graduate student in Computer Science at BYU, needs a break from his studies, he doesn't lock himself in his apartment or catch a flick.   Instead, he heads down to Spanish Fork and puts in a few hours at the South Utah Valley Animal Shelter.     Given the odor and the noise that come from all the animals the shelter houses, you might not expect a man to find solace in a setting like this. State of the Union zeros in on Tech Industry; government creates grants for students

In his sixth State of the Union address, President Bush took time to highlight the importance of technology in the lives of everyday Americans.  In a speech in which the president "wanted to focus on a handful of the most serious, biggest challenges that we face," according to White House deputy chief of staff Joel Kaplan, the role of technology in the nation's strength and security was discussed. CS Alumni Spotlight--David Crowther, '93

David Crowther graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Computer Science in 1993.  Following graduation he went to work for Novell where he has been employed for 14 years, holding positions in the Technical Support Division, on the Common Engineering Services Team, and currently as Director of Global Technical Support.  He and his team are currently responsible for supporting SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Desktop, Open Enterprise Server, NetWare, and Novell's Web Products, such as iFolder, Apache, Tomcat, PHP, Perl, and MySQL.   He has authored hundreds of Technical Support Documents for publication on Novell's support Website as well as other technical documentation for Novell.

The second installment of the new BYU Computer Science Undergraduate Seminar series will feature Brett Error, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of Production at Omniture, the second-fastest growing software company in the nation, according to Baseline Magazine.  Error will discuss changes in the computer science industry, opportunities at Omniture, and what it means for you.  All undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to attend.  Donuts will be provided.

Novell at BYU

Steven Weitzeil, director of engineering in identity and security management at Novell arrived on campus Thursday as part of the new BYU Computer Science Undergraduate Seminar Series.  His presentation discussed the corporate environment at Novell before describing industry trends and what it takes to be successful in Computer Science.
