Alum pioneers in family history for the LDS Church

Heath Nielson received his bachelors and masters degrees from the Computer Science Department at BYU, studying computer graphics and image processing under Dr. William A. Barrett. He is now a software engineer for the LDS Church's FamilySearch program. He is the developer of a new digitizing process, which makes it possible for FamilySearch technicians to digitize the Church's 2.4 million genealogical records in 8-10 years, a process which was originally estimated to take over a century to complete. Dr. Parris Egbert named as new Computer Science Department chair

After serving as chair of the Computer Science Department for nine years, Dr. Tony Martinez is stepping down to pursue other duties in the department and his research in the department's Neural Networks and Machine Learning Laboratory. In a faculty meeting with the Dean and Assistant Deans from the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Dr. Parris Egbert was named the new department chair, effective June 1, 2008. Read More

Dr. Sean Warnick awarded prestigious national honor

Dr. Sean Warnick, Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Brigham Young University, was selected as the 2008 Distinguished Visiting Professor (DVP) by the National Security Agency (NSA) this week. The position, administered by the NSA Enterprise Operations Research, Modeling, and Simulation (OR/M&S) Group, is highly competitive and is offered to a professor with a distinguished record in both decision science applications and student mentoring.
