Mentored research opportunities double in the BYU Computer Science Department

In the last several years, donations from outside sources, comprised of  generous friends, alumni, and industrial partners, have allowed the BYU Computer Science Department to experience unprecedented growth in mentored research.  From the 2006-2007 academic year to the 2007-2008 academic year alone, the number of mentored research positions made possible by outside sources doubled from 30 to 61.  The expansion of mentored learning reflects the department’s goal to fulfill former-LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley’s hope that “very soon every student will have a unique BYU mentoring opportunity that will increase both the rate and depth of their learning.” Read More

Family History Technology Spotlight—Sophomore Computer Science Student Mitchell Harris

Each year, the Computer Science Department hosts the Family History Technology Conference, a venue designed to bring computer scientists and genealogists together to discuss emergent technology aimed at aiding the family history. This year’s conference brought together experts in each field from around the world—participants arrived in Provo from as far away as Sweden and the United Kingdom. Mitchell Harris, a sophomore in computer science, made a splash this year with his presenation on a simple, yet novel, way of conducting family history research. Read More

Don't miss the Computer Science Department's annual social for alumni, graduate students, faculty, and their families.  This year's event will be Thursday, July 10, with a golf tournament during the day and a barbecue at Rock Canyon Park, which will begin at 5:30 pm.   Games and Grub will be the social event for the entire family; homecoming later this year will be a special event just for adults.

From Happy Valley to the Heart of Texas--a CS graduate makes her mark

Jamie Palmer graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science in December 2006.  While at BYU, she also earned a second major in Chemistry and a minor in Physics.  And if a demanding academic schedule wasn’t enough, Jamie took the time to participate in a summer internship with ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas.  Her hard work and dedication paid off, however.  In December, she accepted a full-time placement position with ExxonMobil in Houston, where she is combining her love of chemistry and computer science and continuing to excel.
